A Dynamical Miss: A Study of the Discrepancy Between Optical and Infrared Kinematics in Mergers

چکیده
Recently, controversy has erupted over whether gas-rich spiralspiral mergers are capable of forming m∗ ellipticals. Measurements of σ◦ from the 2.29μm CO band-head for local LIRG/ULIRGs, suggest they are not. IRbright mergers are often cited as the best candidates for forming massive ellipticals, so the recent observations have raised doubts about both the Toomre Merger Hypothesis and the fundamental assumptions of Λ-CDM galaxy formation models. However, kinematics obtained with the Calcium II Triplet at 8500 Å suggest mergers are forming m ≥ m∗ ellipticals. In this work, we show that kinematics derived from the CO stellar absorption band-head leads to a significant underestimation of the masses of LIRGs/ULIRGs. This is primarily due to the presence of a young population affecting CO band-head measurements.

The Mass Assembly History of Spheroidal Galaxies: Did Newly-formed Systems Arise via Major Mergers?
We examine the properties of a morphologically-selected sample of 0.4 < z < 1.0 spheroidal galaxies in the GOODS fields in order to ascertain whether their increase in abundance with time arises primarily from major mergers. To address this question we determine scaling relations between the dynamical mass Mdyn, determined from stellar velocity dispersions, and the stellar mass M∗, determined f...
متن کاملProposing a 2D Dynamical Model for Investigating the parameters Affecting Whiplash Injuries
This paper proposes a 2D dynamical model for evaluating parameters affecting whiplash. In fact a four segment dynamical model is developed in the sagittal plane for the analysis. The model response is validated using the existing experimental data and is shown to simulate the "S-Shape" and "initial upward ramping" kinematics of the cervical spine and the resulting dynamics observed in human and...
متن کاملKinematics and Dynamics of two Cooperating Robots in Spatial Moving of an Object
The kinematics and dynamics of two industrial cooperating robots are presented in this paper. The NOC (natural orthogonal complement) method is used to derive the dynamical equations for the motion of two cooperating robots. The joint torques of the two robots are determined based on the optimization techniques in order to obtain unique solution for joint torques. To this end, minimizing the cr...
متن کاملOptical Imaging of the Motor Cortex in the Brain in Order to Determine the Direction of the Hand Movements Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS)
Introduction: In recent years, optical imaging has attracted a lot of attention from scholars as a non- aggressive, efficient method for evaluating the activities of the motor cortex in the brain. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS (is a tool showing the hemodynamic changes in a cortical area of the brain according to optical principles. The present study has been de...
